Blush & Cream Houston Wedding by J. Cogliandro Photography

This Houston wedding story is going to give you all the feels, so be prepared! Lindsey and Drew met in February of 2012 at the Philadelphia airport’s international check-in. They were on their way to a 10-day adventure in Israel with a group organization, and by the end of the trip they had each separately told their friends that they found their person. Lindsey had no clue Drew had said the same thing to his friends that she had, until the night of their rehearsal dinner, when Drew’s best man recalled in his speech, “Drew came home and said he’d met the girl he was going to marry.” Goosebumps. Drew absolutely insisted on proposing in a way that would mean the world to Lindsey. He had been working with Lindsey’s boss to get her to Philadelphia airport’s international check-in for a fake business trip…and he proposed right there where they’d first met many years ago. “The area was empty except for one older security staff member, who told us we had restored his faith in humanity,” the bride recounts. After spending the entire day in Philadelphia to celebrate as a newly engaged couple, Lindsey and Drew were returned home to a surprise celebration with their families! The pair then started to plan their Houston wedding. With 230 of their friends and loved ones in attendance, Lindsey and Drew said, “I do.” However, they took the traditional wedding series of events into their own hands. One of their favorite memories was their “first look” at Discovery Green, after which they stopped with their entire wedding party to have a pre-ceremony drink while taking pictures with J. Cogliandro Photography. (We seriously love this idea!) It’s safe to say that Lindsey and Drew have restored our faith in humanity, too. We couldn’t be happier for this sweet couple!

Blush, Champagne & Gray Wedding by J. Cogliandro Photography

It was fate when Maggie and Cory met by chance at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck back in 2012. They saw each other from across the room and instantly connected. A few days later Cory took Maggie out on a date and just knew this was it. After going on many picnic dates at Hermann Park, she had no idea that one day he was going to propose there as well. “I was not surprised when he picked me up with a bottle of wine and asked if I wanted to go to the park. After sitting by the reflecting pool, we visited the tree that we had our first picnic under. Cory told me this was the very spot that he fell in love with me,” recounts Maggie. He got down on one knee and you can guess what happened next. The pair was so inspired after their trip to Paris during Christmas, that they decided to have a French-themed celebration with heavy influence from their family history. Maggie incorporated her grandmother’s rosary in her bouquet and wore her godmother’s diamond bracelet, which beautifully accessorized her fit-and-flare Rivini gown from Mia Bridal Couture. “The church pews were lined with fresh flowers in handmade cones that were made from my grandmother’s sheet music collection when she was a piano teacher,” adds Maggie. We couldn’t be happier for these lovebirds and can’t wait for you to swoon over the photos from J. Cogliandro Photography. Feeling inspired? Go ahead and pin some photos and start planning your fabulous Houston wedding!

Joe Knows Weddings: Photographer Joe Cogliandro on How to Choose Your Wedding Vendors

Photo: J. Cogliandro Photography

Today you’re in for a special Houston Wedding Blog treat, darlings! Renowned fine-art, portrait, wedding and boudoir photographer Joe Cogliandro joins us for the first in a series of guest posts we’re calling “Joe Knows Weddings.” Why? Because, with 14 years of experience shooting many of the most magnificent nuptial celebrations in Texas (and across the country), the founder of J. Cogliandro Photography does know weddings—and the brides and grooms having them–incredibly well.

For our first installment, Joe responds to a recently engaged friend who’s having difficulty deciding on vendors—and offers his thoughts on the power of personal connection:

Bride-to-be, Leah: “Joe…. Did you get the message I sent you on Facebook a few days ago? I know it was sorta out of the blue since we had not talked in a while but I wanted to let you know that I recently got engaged! Yes…yes, I know, pretty crazy and super unexpected, since we have only been dating two months. But you know how things happen… one day you don’t have a clue what life is going to bring you then suddenly everything is clear.

Greg and I met at yoga class a few months ago and have pretty much been inseparable since. I wanted to let you know personally since you have been such a good friend through the years and (of course) I wanted your opinion on a couple of vendors. We are getting married in six months and I only have the location and coordinator picked out, and I have had tons of advice from everyone on who to use for all the other things.

The problem is…they all seem pretty good, they all have such good recommendations and many have been used by my friends. I know you are in the industry and thought I would get your professional opinion. We are currently looking for a florist, DJ/band, photographer and videographer. My mom and a few of my bridesmaids just attended a big bridal show and though it was helpful and answered a ton of questions, I feel like it left us with many more questions unanswered. We have already met with about three or four vendors in each category, but I am at a loss on how to choose. Some of them seem the clear choice but others seem like they can go either way… so…clarity…I need some clarity!”

Joe Cogliandro: “Leah! So good to hear from you and so excited for this craziness happening in your life! I have the simplest advice for you regarding your vendors. I am going to assume since you are not bringing up finances that all of these vendors pretty much fall into your budget, and that since you have met with them and you still have a few for each category, that they are all good at what they do. You also said that each one has been recommended by someone you know, right? If all of these factors have already checked out, then all that is left is for you to choose the people that are going to make you the happiest. If you are certain of their professionalism and you trust they will all follow through with what they say they can deliver, then it’s just about relationship at this point.

Over the next few months, each of your vendors will play a pivotal role in your life. Now, they may not be your best buds, they may not meet up with you for drinks after work or attend your Christmas party… but the energy they bring into your life will either positively or negatively affect much of what is happening in the rest of your personal life. These people are helping you plan the biggest day in your life, so it’s only natural that the relationship you have with them will be an emotional one, to an extent.

Pick the people that you would have share this time with you. Which florist made you smile the most? Which photographer could you actually see holding a conversation with you (or more importantly your friends and family)? Which DJ do you believe will help project the environment that you want for your friends and family to share? Which of these people, given other circumstances, could possibly be your friends? Which have shown you that they care about you and your needs, not just about what they do and have done? You want people on your team… that are working together for your sake, not for their own individually. Here’s my advice in a nutshell:

  • Pick people that will add energy not take it away… life is too busy to hire someone negative.
  • Pick People that will LOVE you and your family.
  • Pick people that you want to do life with for the next few months because they will bring more joy into an already joyful occasion.
  • Pick people that will make you happy.

So, Leah my answer is simple pick the person, not the vendor. Congratulations, and let me know how it’s going as you progress with your plans!

Do you have a question for Joe? Email us, or drop your comment on this post. And check back for our second installment of Joe Knows Weddings early in the New Year. Happy planning, loves!

WEDDINGS IN HOUSTON Spring 2015 | Real Wedding Feature

Katie & Mitchell ~ March 8, 2014

Jewelry designer Katie Decker has a passion for ornamentation, so it’s no surprise the bride selected La Colombe d’Or’s magnificently ornate, oak-paneled Grand Salon to celebrate her marriage to high-school sweetheart Mitchell. Having already designed her own rose-gold engagement ring, Katie took her inspiration from the romantic hue, bringing the color to her cake, her invitations, even her blush-toned Ines Di Santo gown from beloved Houston salon Mia Bridal Couture. At the couple’s elegant reception, French-style furniture surrounding the dance floor “made it feel as if you had gone back in time and entered a Belle-Epoque-style club,” Katie says. And while dining and dancing in that lavish environment was decidedly delightful, the bride says her favorite memory was “walking down the aisle and seeing Mitchell for the first time, with all our friends and family in one place. It was so surreal…and such a happy occasion.”

Peach, Pink and Gold Wedding at The Houstonian by J. Cogliandro Photography

Saturday, April 4th, 2015

Ashley had been bugging Rick to plan the perfect date night, and that he did. Rick made dinner reservations at one of their favorite restaurants. Even when were then seated at a table with a dozen roses and a bottle of wine, Ashley still didn’t suspect anything. After all, they were low-key, private people–it never occurred to her that Rick would propose in public. But as soon as they were done with their meal, the restaurant’s manager personally presented the couple with dessert under a cloche cover. When Ashley removed the cloche, she discovered a ring box, and, well, let’s just say it turned out to be a date night she’d never forget. Ashley and Rick’s opulent wedding at The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa was a dream come true. “We ended up creating exactly what we wanted, a very festive and romantic atmosphere with a classic feel that recognized the importance of the moment”,” the bride says. Tall pink and peach candelabras, and hanging candles above the dance floor, added the perfect touch of romance and elegance to the evening. Thanks J. Cogliandro for the beautiful photos, and congrats to the newlyweds!
