As 2012 bridal collections hit local salons, we’ll be offering you glimpses at some of our favorites. Fun, right? We think so!
Let’s just go ahead and kick things off with Kenneth Pool —a favorite of Houston brides, who will find plenty to go ga-ga over in the sumptuous spring and fall 2012 bridal collections. Designed by the exceptionally talented Amsale Aberra (also the artiste behind the Christos and Amsale bridal lines), Kenneth Pool spring 2012 (below) will not disappoint brides who crave the intricate crystal beading that gives the designer’s wedding gowns their signature sparkle. Among our favorites is the alluring “Alana” silk taffeta ballgown, with its heavily beaded bodice and absolutely gorgeous draped skirt. Some stunning fit-and-flare and trumpet styles, too, featuring dramatically bustled trains, and, again, that spectacular (but never over-the-top) beading on bodices, belts and train appliqués.
For fall 2012 (above), which just walked the runway at October’s New York International Bridal Market, Kenneth Pool turned up the volume—as in voluminous skirts and bustles, full of tiers, layers and big fluffy ruffles, many with a modern asymmetrical slant. It’s an exciting new angle for Kenneth Pool wedding dresses, and we LOVE it.
See these gowns for YOURSELF this Friday and Saturday, when Houston’s very own Mia Bridal Couture hosts a Kenneth Pool Fall 2012 trunk show. A Kenneth Pool style expert will be on hand, and brides who purchase during the show will receive a 10% discount (no small savings, with Kenneth Pool’s couture gowns in the $4,000-$10,000 range, and beyond). Appointments are required; call 713.622.2022 to make yours!

Some couples are just destined to be together. That’s how it was with Amey and William. A friend first suggested William as a “perfect” guy for Amey (though at the time, amazingly, getting set up was the furthest thing from Amey’s mind). An unexpected Facebook friend request from the groom-to-be eventually got things rolling, and William’s general adorableness and devotion sealed the deal. About her true love, our bride Amey says, “It’s as if God went down the checklist in my heart and formed William just for me!” Sweet, right? Also sweet—and chic, and elegant, and so sophisticated—was the couple’s April wedding at Briscoe Manor. We are loving the use of richly colored lighting on Briscoe Manor’s rough-hewn walls. And that rose-and-sparkle-encrusted cake from Edible Designs by Jessie? To die for. Blanca Duran’s magnificent photography really captures the lush, glittering beauty of this wedding—and we couldn’t be happier to feature it here!

Tiny tubes of moisturizer, itsy bitsy fragrance vials, bite-size bits of anything yummy—we love us some samples. Especially when the sample in question is a designer wedding gown. How about more than 100 designer gowns? From top bridal design houses like Amsale, Rivini, Kenneth Pool, Liancarlo and more?? That’s what you’ll find when Mia Bridal Couture hosts its sensational off-the-rack sample sale this Sunday from noon-4 p.m. Please note that dresses pictured above represent designers that will be featured at the sale, but not the exact gowns that will be featured.
No appointments, early arrival is strongly encouraged, here’s what to expect: Mia has five dressing rooms, so the salon will allow five brides (with an entourage of up to three guests each) into the store at a time. During your time in the store you can choose four dresses to try on. Once you decide on a dress, a very helpful and gracious Mia staffer will have you pay for your dress in full (at a discount of 50-75% off!!) hand you a list of alteration and cleaning specialists, and send you on your soon-to-be-married way.
A few tips when buying your wedding dress off the rack, courtesy of Mia’s Lisa Toenjes:
- If a dress is too small, you can have your seamstress change it to a lace-up.
- A dress can be taken in approximately three sizes before you lose the look of the dress.
- Remember to bring a strapless bra, your favorite heels (or shoes of the same heel height you plan to wear for your wedding), your friends, a camera and lots of excitement!
Good luck, gown shoppers. And remember, patience and manners, girls. It’s just plain good wedding karma!

Whew. It’s been an exhilarating (read: kind of crazy) couple of months, what with working on soon-to-be-launched redesigns of the Weddings in Houston website and this here blog, not to mention putting together the big, beautiful, bursting-with-inspiration January print issue of Weddings in Houston.
Of course, in the midst of this delightful madness, the New York bridal market just wrapped, and we are so excited to treat you to a preview of our favorite fall 2011 collections, straight from the market runways.
So let’s just start with a bang shall we? Bridal couture darling Rivini staged its show at the Alvin Ailey Theater, home of the legendary Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Which would have been cool enough. But then there were the gowns—oh, what gowns. Inspired by the French impressionist Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny, designer Rita Vinieris created a magnificently textured collection featuring extraordinary pleating, layering, tufting and draping—in other words, lots of working of fabric that somehow never looked overworked.

We checked in with Emily Sutton of Mia Bridal Couture for her take on the Rivini fall 2011 collection, and here’s what she told us: “Seeing these gowns on the runway whisks you away to [Monet’s gardens]. Rita manipulated the structural details to provide strong silhouettes with effortless movement.” Sutton says she loves how the collection’s bold lines “were softened by floral motifs and organic draping.”
Plus, we LOVE Rivini’s use of black and blingy belts, and chunky jewelry, as edgy counterpoints to these romantic gowns.
Check out our favorite designs from the Rivini collection—and check baclk over the next few weeks (or better yet subscribe to WIH and let US come to YOU) for more fall 2011 previews!
