A One-of-a-Kind Dress? Oh, YES!

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Houston-based wedding gown designer Melina Cristina knows that every bride deserves to feel special on her big day. Like, extremely special. Like, one-of-a-kind special. Which is exactly how you’ll feel when you work with Melina to create your perfect “true couture” wedding dress.

At the recent grand opening of Melina Cristina Bridal Couture in River Oaks, we sat down with Melina to discuss what makes her gowns extraordinary. The simple answer?  YOU, of course. All of her gowns are custom-made to fit each bride’s unique style, providing a true couture experience from start to finish. The moment you step through the door, you will be greeted warmly and made to feel comfortable while Melina and her staff begin the process of creating the dress you’ve always dreamed of wearing.

Not sure what you’re looking for?  Not a problem. As a bride, you are welcome to browse through her current collection, try on any one of her previously made dresses, and determine what look you like the most. From there, Melina will work with you to decide on a specific design, complete with stunning details like authentic Swarovski crystals—and, if you’re game, lots of ‘em…Melina loves her bling—to make your dress one-of-a-kind.

The whole idea behind Melina Cristina Bridal Couture is for each bride to find the dress that is meant for her in every way, without having to pay a fortune.  The prices range from about $1,800 to $9,800, depending on the material and embellishments used, which is about what you’d pay for a gown in any local bridal salon. And rest assured, we’re talking about the finest quality silks, laces and ornamentation, chosen by Melina Cristina herself.

And here’s the best part: OK, OK, your very own one-of-a-kind couture wedding dress is the best part. But here’s the OTHER best part: Twenty percent of all Melina Cristina’s sales are donated to Melina’s own non-profit organization, which builds vitally important water wells in Africa. Just imagine–you can help save lives by purchasing your dream gown!

Look good, do good, feel good. It’s a wedding win-win-win! Call 713.489.4424 to make an appointment or visit her online.

The bling thing is so hot for 2011 weddings, if Swarovski weren’t family owned, we’d buy stock in ’em. The ubiquitous Austrian crystals and rhinestones are showing up on everything from invitations to linens to cakes (a la Susie Edwards’ dazzler on display at October’s I Do! Bridal Soiree @ ZaZa).

As for wearable sparkle, designers are doing amazing things with bling—from crystal- and rhinestone-encrusted belts and bodices to tiers of tulle sprinkled with tiny crystal beads for a dreamy, fairytale effect. But our hands-down favorite use of sparkle is on bridal footwear.

Cinderella knew the effect of a twinkling shoe. Dorothy’s helped her find her way home. Your sparkling wedding-day shoes may just create a little magic of their own. At the very least, they’ll look incredibly glamorous peeping out from beneath your bridal gown.

New Wedding Gown Collection from Waterford Wedgwood’s Jorge Perez

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Perez3
Best known as the suave and style-savvy director of bridal and special events for crystal/china leader Waterford Wedgwood, Jorge Perez has gotten into gowns. That’s right, the wedding-gifts guru—you may remember when we sat down with him to talk registry trends–has debuted his wedding gown line, Jorge Perez de la Habana, which will be available to brides in early January.

perez4
Cuban-born Perez draws inspiration from his grandmother, who sketched and created intricate gowns for family members for quinceañeras, weddings and other special events. Marked by a “1950s Havana” feel, and embellished with brilliant Swarovski crystals and other luxurious details, Perez’s gowns have vintage appeal, along with a good dose of va-va-voom. We even spotted one “wow” gown with a bejeweled, transparent midriff! While a see-through wedding dress might not be every girl’s cup of tea (served in Wegwood china, of course), more than a few fashionable Houston brides are sure to be enticed by Perez’s ruffled trains, sparkling bodices and lavish Latin flair.

For now, Jorge Perez de la Habana is available from Kleinfeld Manhattan…but we have no doubt these spectacular gowns will be coming to a boutique near us soon.
