After a chance meeting while celebrating Cinco de Mayo, Jessica and Andrew immediately hit it off while bonding over Sperry’s. Jessica noticed Andrew’s white Sperry’s and blurted out that she had the same shoes but in cheetah print. This led him to ask “who wears cheetah” so naturally, Jessica recites the next line of the Selfie Song and they’ve been inseparable since. “Our meeting was ridiculous, and throughout that entire night, we recited the Selfie Song obnoxiously, laughed, and talked about everything and nothing,” recalls Jessica. “It felt like we found the perfect person at the perfect time.” At the end of the night, Andrew asked Jessica for her number a street over from where they would, later on, have their fall wedding at. “I’m a massive believer in fate, and I knew there was a reason we met.”

Just as fate intended, the couple tied the knot in a dreamy outdoor garden ceremony surrounded by 120 of their loved ones. For the reception, velvet place cards in a color palette of navy, burgundy, and ivory and velvet linens played a critical role in their fall wedding. “The color was a representation of the type of entree that had been picked,” explains Jessica. “My mother’s name in Vietnamese translates to velvet, so I wanted to pay homage to that. EB Inc. Event Rentals & Design was able to make my velvet dreams come true, and we were able to have ivory and red velvet linens for our tables.” Guests dined on steak churrasco and lemon rosemary chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and haricot verts before hitting the dancefloor. To pay homage to Jessica’s Vietnamese culture, the newlyweds surprised guests with a Lion Dance performance and Jessica wore a traditional Vietnamese dress. Jessica and Andrew’s biggest obstacle while planing their fall wedding was having to narrow down the vendors they went with. Says Jessica: “I really built some amazing relationships with the people in the wedding industry and there is so much talent and love that fuels into our special day. I wish I could’ve hired everyone I met at the I Do! Soiree.” Join us in celebrating this sweet couple and swooning over their gorgeous fall wedding, all beautifully documented by Houston wedding photographer Kate Elizabeth Photography and Houston wedding videographer Reverent Wedding Films. Congratulations, Jessica & Andrew!

Intimate Destination Wedding in Hawaii

Bella, an operations manager, and Larry, a piping designer, traveled to Colorado for a Texans vs Broncos game, but little did Bella know, Larry had the romantic surprise of a lifetime waiting for her on their trip. “On November 1, 2018, we planned a hike to a lake in the mountains with ‘a friend’ of his,” recalls Bella. “Turned out he was a professional photographer. About an hour into the hike he asked me to sit beside him on a rock overlooking the lake. While admiring the beautiful scenery he tried to get romantic but failed, as I refused to stop throwing snow at him. He finally stood me up and got down in one knee and asked to marry me. With tears in my eyes, I accepted.”

A year later, it was only fitting for the travel-loving couple to have an intimate destination wedding in Oahu, Hawaii. The bride and groom exchanged vows in a romantic beachfront ceremony, overlooking the pristine blue waters of Kāne‘ohe Bay, all beautifully documented by Houston wedding photographer Civic Photos and Houston wedding videographer Meant To Be Films. Following their outdoor ceremony, the newlyweds set sail on a private catamaran cruise and joined 72 of their loved ones in an open-air reception surrounded by lush tropical foliage and majestic mountains. Bella describes the wedding decor as, “Tropical with natural flower arrangements that accentuated the beautiful scenery,” featuring a lovely color palette of ivory, gold and burgundy. Guests dined on coconut shrimp, Jamaican jerk chicken and pork, and Mahi Mahi, before dancing the night away under the Hawaiian moonlight. The bride’s favorite moment? “Our first dance after becoming Mrs. Herrera.” Join us in swooning over this beautiful destination wedding in Hawaii. Congratulations, Bella & Larry!

Wedding Video Q&A with 31 Films’ Joey Mathews

Keep reading to see how Mathews’ “passion thing” evolved into one of  Houston’s top wedding videography companies, and view 31 Films’ amazing work!

Houston Wedding Blog: How did you get started in Houston’s wedding videography biz?

Joey Mathews: We started back in 2002 and there wasn’t really a business strategy. We were just really passionate about filmmaking and we did a few weddings for friends just for fun. Before we knew it, we were like, “this is actually a job!” For us, it was very much a passion thing that organically snowballed through the years and became what it is today.

HWB: How would you describe 31 Films’ aesthetic?

JM: Our aesthetic is walking the line of “cinematic-beautiful” and true documentary. Early on we wanted to just get all these really cool shots and wow people. But as we got older and had families of our own, we started to recognize how meaningful true emotional moments are at weddings.

HWB: What is your advice to couples for getting wedding videos they’ll treasure forever?

JM: A lot about telling couples’ stories in a meaningful and personal way comes from personal details and little mini-stories that the couple has. Any time that a couple can show their love for each other — a lot of times that is through a letter that they read for each other on their wedding day — it adds so much meaning. As they get older and they start having kids, for those kids to be able to hear what Mom and Dad’s voice sounded like and how they felt about each other on that day…those are the types of moments that we encourage our couples to think about. If they don’t do any of those things the video ends up being event, to event, to event.

Beyond that, when we are shooting it is really about the couple having a blast and us not getting in the way. If the couple can be themselves and really have a great time, we will be able to capture those moments naturally.

HWB: What shots do wedding couples tell you they liked the most?

JM: When the couple gets introduced to the reception we will usually film a really wide angled shot following right behind them, and for them it relives that reveal of the room and reveal of all their closest friends and family cheering them on. Also getting time with the couple typically after the ceremony to get romantic footage that isn’t super posed, but is just them being together, is important. I think couples really love when they see those shots and we take a lot of pride in being able to get great magical moments within three minutes!

HWB: In your opinion what makes 31 Films really stand out as a wedding videographer?

JM: We pay really close attention to story, and how we edit that story together really helps us stand out. When I say story, I mean capturing the emotion of the day, the love between the couple, the families and how they all interact. Most brides say that they look at other filmmakers, and their stuff looks great, but they don’t really feel the way they do when they watch our films. There is so much that goes into filmmaking so it’s hard to say it’s one thing, but at the end of the day, I think it really comes down to how we put the story together in an emotional way that’s not overly-epic, but is true.
